    Success Starts at the Back

    Success Starts at the Back

Whisper it quietly, but Liverpool could be six games into a very important run of form. An eight point deficit to fourth place is now down to one, and it’s another week closer to the major attacking threats of Torres, Benayoun and Johnson returning. With every passing month, another top-four challenger falls away; as happens every year. People worrying about the threat of Birmingham has been made to look premature.

While failing to beat Wolves was disappointing (as was the grim attacking display), the last five league games – only two of which were at home – have seen the Reds pick up three wins, two draws and no defeats; keeping four clean sheets, too. That extrapolates to 84 points over 38 games – not that I’m saying Liverpool will achieve such a haul, I’m just pointing out that the current run of form, even including last night, is a big improvement on earlier in the campaign.

At last a bit of form – joint 2nd in the Premiership form league based over the past six games. But every match remains must-win if the momentum is to be maintained.

    Aquilani – Cause Célèbre

    Aquilani – Cause Célèbre

All this followed months of impatience from fans and media alike, none of which helped Benítez or his Italian acquisition. For many the new signing turned into the solution to the problem, and then as soon as he played, he himself was a problem. Classic football nonsense. So, let’s have some facts, and some analysis of why it took so long for him to get a game, and what at he’s done in the first team, now that he’s had a few starts.

End to the ‘Perfect Storm’ in Sight?

End to the ‘Perfect Storm’ in Sight?

A few weeks back, Liverpool were eight points off 4th place. Now the gap is down to four. Lost in all the drama of an FA cup shock (which, let’s face it, happened to Shankly, Paisley and Dalglish, and to Alex Ferguson as recently as this month) was that the Reds are closing in on the top four.

A shame, after the late miss/penalty claim, that we’re not going into this with three league wins on the spin. But the good news this weekend was that the Reds got the best result out of the four challenging for 4th, with City losing at Everton, and Spurs and Villa drawing at home with teams lower in the table than Stoke.

    Liverpool’s Reffing Hell

    Liverpool’s Reffing Hell

The shocking, damning statistic is that this season Liverpool have been awarded only 15% of undeniably clear penalties, and 13% if you include a couple of very strong “seen them given” shouts. That’s right; 13 penalties should have been awarded, with a further two taken into consideration. Only two have been given. Even with my obvious Liverpool bias, and in full whinge-mode, I find that quite incredible.
