Many Liverpool fans are in a dilemma about Daniel Agger. Some say he is our best centre-back and when we keep clean sheets, he is generally involved. Others say that he is moving towards the ‘melting’ phase of his career and should be moved on while we can get some cash for him, not to mention money off the wage bill.
Personally, I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. If money were no object, I’d certainly have him in the squad. In the starting XI is another matter seeing as Sakho is looking like he could be there for some time, let alone the question of whether two lefties can play at the back.
To try to find an answer, I thought I’d take a brief look at the numbers and see what we can find out.
Firstly, how many goals does each player concede when playing?
All stats are for this season up to and including the 3-2 victory over Man City at home and taken from WhoScored, TransferMarkt and Squawka.
So there we have it. Agger concedes the least per game, nearly the most clean sheets (from 17 fewer games) and has the highest clean sheet percentage.
Settled then. Agger is the best player we have for the defence. But is he? How does he compare on an individual basis to our other defenders and to the ‘best’ in the league?
