The Evolution of ‘Fanhood’

The Evolution of ‘Fanhood’
October 10, 2011 Paul Tomkins

One of the things I’ve come to realise is just how many different types of football fan there are; and maybe, more than most, there are even more types of Liverpool fan, on account of the club’s history and global appeal.

I’m tempted to say that no type of fanhood is wrong. Being a fan is just what a club means to you; it doesn’t have to be a duplicate of someone else’s to be valid.

Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t idiotic ways of behaving, or that all fans are as passionate as one another. There are fans more dedicated than others, and fans more knowledgeable than others, but that doesn’t mean the two are always one and the same.

However, this is more the story of changing fanhood; how we develop in our support as we progress through our lives.
