Midfield
By Chris Rowland and Daniel Rhodes.
OK, now for the engine room. Last season it fired in fits and starts, perhaps working best during our unbeaten run when playing three Centre-backs and two wing-backs. We’re classing Emre Can as a central midfielder because we suspect he might be, and he certainly thinks he is, despite having played at right centre-back with some aplomb and right-back with a marked absence of aplomb last season. Ibe and Markovic are also included here as midfielders as a result of their deployment as wing-backs last season, though a case could be made that both and especially Ibe should be included under ‘Attack’ in Part 3.
NB: Remember we’re only featuring players who made at least five competitive starts (an appearance of 45 minutes or more) for the Reds’ first team in 2014/2015.
