Born in Kinshasa in the DR Congo in December 1990, Benteke and his family emigrated to Liege in Belgium, where he began his professional career at Standard Liège, playing in their 2008–09 Belgian First Division triumph. He then moved to Genk in the Belgian league, and spent time on loan at Mechelen and Kortrijk before returning to Genk. He was signed for £7 million by Aston Villa in August 2012.
