Is Gini Wijnaldum the Most Complete Player In World Football?

Okay, for starters, such things are hard to quantify. For at least two years I’ve been calling Gini Wijnaldum the most underrated player in Europe, but then I wonder if instead that honour should belong to Roberto Firmino; but then Firmino will often be called the most underrated player in Europe, which means he’s actually frequently “rated”.

Wijnaldum goes through phases of seeing his virtues extolled, but mostly he goes under the radar. Maybe I’m overcompensating here, but what a fantastic all-rounder he really is.

I drafted the bulk of this article last week, to publish at some unnamed point, and now I’ve just seen that he’s bagged a hat-trick for Holland (so, let’s strike while the iron is hot), to take him to eight for the calendar year, in just nine games. Is there anything he can’t do?

And if Liverpool get any injuries to their strikers, could he – as he did against Barcelona – help bridge the gap?
