Liverpool face Brighton & Hove Albion for the second time this season, as we look to book our place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup by overcoming the Seagulls at Anfield in the 5th round of the FA Cup. The two clubs met earlier in the season in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup at the Amex Stadium, a tie Liverpool won 2-1 thanks to goals from Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt before a 90th minute consolation was scored by Ashley Barnes via the penalty spot.
Brighton, managed by former Chelsea and Spurs favourite Gus Poyet, have been on an upward trajectory since Poyet was appointed their manager in November 2009. The Seagulls’ five year stint in League One came at an end in Poyet’s first full season as they were crowned champions of the division – for the third time in their history – at the end of 2010/11, earning them promotion to the Championship in the process. This is the second consecutive season the Seagulls have reached the 5th round stage of the FA Cup under their Uruguayan manager.
Kenny Dalglish has a phenomenal record in the FA Cup, reaching three finals (winning two), and a further semi-final between 1985/86 and 1989/1990 as Liverpool manager during his first stint in charge. He also reached the FA Cup final with Newcastle Utd during his only full season in charge of the Geordie outfit in 1997/98, losing to Arsenal 2-0.

FA CUP HISTORY
Liverpool have lifted the FA Cup on seven occasions, with the last victory coming in 2006 when we defeated West Ham Utd on penalties after the game finished 3-3 after normal and then extra time. Our other triumphs in the FA Cup came in 2001 (against Arsenal), 1992 (Sunderland), 1989 (Everton), 1986 (Everton), 1974 (Newcastle) and 1965 (Leeds Utd).
Only three sides have lifted the FA Cup on more occasions than Liverpool: Man Utd with 11 victories, Arsenal with ten and Spurs with eight. The Reds have also been runners up on six occasions, losing to Burnley in 1914, Arsenal in 1950, Arsenal again in 1971, Manchester Utd in 1977, Wimbledon in 1988 and Manchester Utd in 1996. Only Everton with eight losing final appearances and Newcastle, Manchester Utd and Arsenal – all with seven – have lost more FA Cup finals than Liverpool.
Brighton have never lifted the FA Cup, reaching the final on just one occasion at the end of the 1982/83 campaign where they lost to Manchester Utd after a replay. Brighton famously knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup during that run to the final, with Phil Neal surprisingly missing a penalty. The clubs met again in the 4th round of the FA Cup during the 1990/91 campaign and Brighton once again produced a surprise result holding Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Anfield, before the Reds won the replay 3-2.
