In the first game back after the closure of transfer window and another international break, Peter Crouch made his debut for Stoke while Craig Bellamy was on the Liverpool bench.
Liverpool had never won in the league at the Britannia going into this game, and Stoke had only lost one of their last ten at home going into this match. On the other hand, Stoke were struggling for goals, having scored only two in their previous five, and failing to score in four of their six Premier League matches against Liverpool.
Both sides had started the season well. In Stoke’s case, it is their best start since getting promotion to the Premier League.
