Liverpool and Manchester City meet for the first time in European competition on Wednesday evening – 7.45pm kick off UK time – in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final. This is Liverpool’s first appearance at this stage of the competition since they faced Chelsea in 2009.
In contrast, City reached the semi-finals as recently as the 2016/17 campaign only to lose 0-1 against Real Madrid over the two legs, while last season they were eliminated at the last 16 stage by Monaco, losing on away goals after the two legged tie finished 6-6, despite Guardiola’s side winning the first leg 5-3 at home.
