Real Madrid it is then for Liverpool in the final of the Champions League in Paris. The two teams met in the same stage of this competition in that very city in 1981 and the Reds lifted the cup with a 1-0 win courtesy of Alan Kennedy’s late goal. Who amongst us would mind seeing a repeat of that outcome in 2022, rather than the more recent one in Kyiv in 2018?

The Spanish side are coming into this game as La Liga champions and high on confidence. Although their performances in the Champions League have been sketchy at best, the resilience and experience shown to come out of adverse situations is something to behold.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men faced probably three of the toughest teams in the competitions in the knockout stages – Paris Saint-Germain, defending champions Chelsea and Manchester City. They were 29 minutes, 10 minutes and three minutes away from getting knocked out in those three ties respectively. But showed character to come back to either level things up or score the winner. The comeback against City was the best of the lot – with them scoring two goals in the 90th minute to push the tie into extra-time, and then eventually winning it.
