Which is the Best Football Club in the World? And How Should We Measure it?

It is a debate that crops up all the time: which is the best football team on the planet? And very often it is hard to pin down because of numerous factors. Should it be the team who wins the Champions League? What about the World Club Cup? If that’s the measure, then the best team in the world at the moment is Chelsea. No doubt, debate over. Except, the Blues haven’t challenged for a league title in England for five years and have finished fifth, third, fourth, fourth and currently sit third again. You can’t claim to be the best club side in the world if you aren’t even challenging to be the best side in your own country.

Is there another way then? There are various models that use a number of different factors to rate sides. In this article we will look at the methods, the historical data and crucially, how Liverpool perform compared to their peers.
