Liverpool host Chelsea on Sunday afternoon – 4.30pm kick off UK time – and there is going to be a lot of replays and talk about this same fixture from when we were last in a title battle with Man City back in 2013/14.
Despite the narrative that will be played to ‘sell’ this fixture, the simple fact is Liverpool head into matchweek 34, two points clear of Manchester City with Pep Guardiola’s side with a game in hand. With City playing at Crystal Palace two and a half hours earlier than the Reds, Liverpool will be kicking off against Chelsea knowing that a win will either take us back to the top of the table or extend our lead and put the title in our own hands if City drop points at Palace.
Either outcome should be motivation enough without adding in the ‘revenge’ narrative for what transpired five seasons ago. Both sides are very different from the ones that faced off on April 27 2014 and the key players and managers that contributed to what played out that day are no longer present at either club.
As Klopp has stated previously, it’s time for this team to write it’s own history.
