Virgil Van Dijk the Best Player in the Premier League? Wolves Run Into the VvD Wall

Wolves are a good side, as their recent results have shown, but they got utterly van Dijked tonight. He absolutely monstered the life out of them, as the Reds won their 15th game out of 18 (in addition to three draws), and, with Christmas just days away, have conceded a scarcely believable seven goals.

Last season it was said that Liverpool can’t defend, and that the lesser clubs would get too many points from them. Well, on top of the best-ever defensive start to a season by any club, Liverpool haven’t dropped a single point to anyone outside the Big Six. (And incredibly, by January 4th, the Reds will have played almost all of their Big Six fixtures; 70%, by the halfway stage.)

While Mo Salah was also sensational tonight, and Man City have their star players, no one seems as important to any side as van Dijk is to Liverpool. He is without doubt the best-all round defender in the league, and possibly the world. Indeed, it’s surprising that he hasn’t scored more goals, to be honest, but in recent weeks he’s had one fluky assist and another proper assist, and now a goal – with a volley on his wrong foot. (To follow his stunning volley for the Dutch against Germany.)
