If you were compiling a list of commentator catch-phrases, ‘If you’re looking for omens…..’ would be number 18. They mostly say ‘If you’re looking for omens…..’ before a game, while they’re busy filling and killing time ahead of any actual foot making any actual contact with any actual ball.
My dictionary told me that an omen is ‘an event seen as a sign of future good or bad luck’. It also said an event is ‘a thing that happens’, and a sign is ‘an indication that something exists, is happening or may happen’. So the commentators are saying ‘If you’re looking for things that happened that are an indication that something may happen that is good or bad…..’. They’re pointing to something from the past that points to something in the future.
