The final international break of 2017 is behind us and there are 12 competitive matches for Liverpool to play before 2018 announces itself upon the world, or 13 in the space off 44 days if you include a trip to Burnley on Jan 1st, if that kind of numerical description floats your boat.
The Reds welcome Southampton to Anfield on Saturday afternoon, in one of those oh-so-rare 3pm kick offs, UK time – in the first of those 13 fixtures which also includes the final two Champions League games and matches against Chelsea, Everton and Arsenal in the Premier League.
Liverpool failed to score a single goal in four matches against the Saints last season, drawing both league games 0-0 (including a James Milner penalty miss in the corresponding fixture back in May) and losing both legs of the League Cup semi-final 0-1, with Virgil Van Dijk only featuring in the first two matches (0-0 in the Premier League and the 1-0 win in the League Cup semi-final first leg, both at St Mary’s).
