It’s the first home match of the season and we leave the house at just after 0630 to get the train to London Waterloo. Just over 8 hours until kick off in one of those retro style 3pm Saturday fixtures. We are leaving even earlier than normal due to major renovation works at Waterloo. In the coming weeks, we will face closures at Euston and Liverpool Lime Street stations.

The planning for the trip starts with waiting for the announcements of which games are on TV. As soon as these are released, it’s a rush to book train tickets before all seat reservations are gone and/or prices go through the roof.

3pm kick-offs are pretty convenient for travelling up and down by train. Earlier kick-offs also work for the train but the atmosphere tends to be flat. Later kick-offs require a long drive by car, which is much less enjoyable.
