Liverpool travel to St Mary’s for the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday – 7.45pm kick off UK time – with the winners of this two legged tie set to face either Hull City or Manchester Utd in the final at Wembley on February 26.
This will be the eighth meeting between the two sides in this competition, with the Reds thumping the Saints 6-1 the last time they met at the quarter-final stage in last season’s competition. Overall Liverpool have won four, drawn one and lost two. They have met in the semi-finals of this competition before, during the 1986/87 campaign, with Liverpool held 0-0 at the Dell before winning the second leg at Anfield 3-0.
Southampton’s only appearance in the final of the League Cup came during the 1978/79 season when they faced Nottingham Forest at Wembley, losing 2-3 to Brian Clough’s side.
