16/17 Premier League Preview – Matchweek 2: Burnley (A)
August 18, 2016 Gary Fulcher

By Gary Fulcher and Daniel Rhodes.

Liverpool got their Premier League campaign off to a thrilling start with the 4-3 victory at the Emirates last Sunday. Saturday’s opponents Burnley – 3pm kick off UK time – will offer a completely different challenge to the one faced by the Gunners so it will be interesting to see how Liverpool will respond against a more physical and disciplined side at Turf Moor.

The Clarets returned to the Premier League at the first time of asking following their relegation at the end of 2014/15, finishing four points clear of 2nd placed Middlesbrough in the Championship, going undefeated in their last 23 games in the league under Sean Dyche.

Burnley opened their campaign with a 0-1 defeat at home against Swansea and have lost their previous four meetings against Liverpool in the Premier League without scoring a single goal:

Date Home Score Away
12.09.2009 Liverpool 4-0 Burnley
25.04.2010 Burnley 0-4 Liverpool
26.12.2014 Burnley 0-1 Liverpool
04.03.2015 Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

Saturday’s meeting will be the 79th in the league between the two sides with all but two of them coming in England’s top flight. The sides met in the old Second Division during the 1904/05 season with Liverpool securing a league double winning 2-0 at Turf Moor and 3-0 at Anfield. Liverpool spent just one season in the Second Division finishing the season as champions, after being relegated the previous season, while Burnley – who were relegated from the First Division at the end of the 1899/00 season – didn’t return to the top flight until 1913/14.
