Reds at the Euros, that is!
By Chris Rowland and Daniel Rhodes.
That European World Cup gets underway on Friday June 10th, and here’s TTT’s guide to events on the other side of la Manche, particularly relating to Liverpool’s contingent.
The Premier League will have more players represented at Euro 2016 than any other league in the world, with nearly one-fifth of the players going to France hailing from England’s top flight.
And with 12 players, Liverpool will be the joint largest provider of players for EURO 2016 (along with Juventus), with Spurs next with 11 and Manchester United 10. (info from www.uefa.com).
It would have been 14 if Lovren hadn’t fallen out with the Croatian coach and Sakho had read the label …
As Beez commented, not bad for such a terrible squad…
103 of the 552 players selected for the European Championship finals ply their trade in the Premier League, 46 more than any other league. In fact, England’s second-tier Championship is the seventh most represented division, and there are 36 players selected from clubs outside the top flight in England.
The totals are:
139 – England (103 Premier League, 31 Championship, 4 League One, 1 League Two)
65 – Germany (57 1. Bundesliga, 8 2. Bundesliga)
56 – Italy (52 Serie A, 4 Serie B)
36 – Turkey (36 Süper Lig)
35 – Spain (34 Primera, 1 Segunda)
32 – Russia (32 Premier League)
22 – France (22 Ligue 1)
More from Turkey than Spain or France – though the Turkey squad accounts for over 20 of them.
