Liverpool will be hoping to reach their 15th semi-final in the League Cup by knocking out Championship side Bourneomouth on Wednesday evening at the Goldsands Stadium – 7.45pm kick off UK time – in the Capital One Cup quarter-final tie.
The two sides met at the 4th round stage of the FA Cup last season with the Reds securing a 2-0 win thanks to goals from the then on loan Moses and Sturridge.
This is the first meeting between the two sides in this competition with all of the previous five encounters coming in the FA Cup. The first meeting came in January 1927 at the 3rd round stage at Dean Court with the tie going to a replay after the match ended 1-1. Liverpool won the replay 4-1 with Harry Chambers stealing the show with a hat-trick. 41 years passed before Liverpool and Bournemouth met again but there would be a similar outcome when they were paired together in 1968, again at the 3rd round stage of the FA Cup with Bournemouth having home advantage. That match ended 0-0 and Liverpool once again won the replay at Anfield 4-1. A further 46 years passed prior to last season’s meeting in the FA Cup and if Bournemouth continue their current form in the Championship – the Cherries are joint top after 21 games and are unbeaten in their last 11 league games, winning eight and drawing three – encounters between the two sides could become a more regular occurrence.
