I loathe the kind of ‘punditry’ that says, just six months on from a 2nd-placed finish, that Liverpool have never looked further away from landing the title. It’s so bereft of logic it’s laughable. It’s pure nonsense.
Only four men in the history of European football have more victories in the European Cup/Champions League than Rafa Benítez. Victory against Debrecen was his 50th in the competition.
The 13 players City used cost £162.5m; the 14 Liverpool used cost £71.4m. That’s well below half of the visitor’s line up. It shows how Liverpool are already well behind City in terms of squad strength, due to the fact that their spending has not been as a result of selling good players first.
