Nice Man; Wrong Job?
It needs to be pointed out that on the basis of his team’s incoherent performances and his own bizarre press conferences, Roy Hodgson looks like the right man in the wrong job.

We have Martin Lipton, noted Spurs fan (hmm, who do we play at the weekend?), slating Rafa’s “terrible transfer policy” and questioning whether Ryan Babel is part of that, or actually just someone who’s just been made a scapegoat by the manager.
So utterly and blindly against Rafa Benítez are men like Martin Samuel and Henry Winter, they’ve gone so far as to defend Graeme Souness’ record as a manager (which, at big clubs in big leagues, is woeful), and even suggest that Benítez’s record, and his side, is no better than the truly abject team of 15-18 years ago.
Stan Collymore and Jamie Redknapp – two Reds I used to stick up for in the ‘90s, but who are now beyond a joke. To be honest, the cream suits debacle deserves to be their legacy. They failed to deliver enough on the pitch, now they put the boot in, week after week.
Two unbelievably crass articles appeared today, one written by a man who should know better, and one by a man whose brains were clearly in the front teeth that got knocked out during his days as a failed player, which came before his days as a never-manager. No wonder newspapers are dying a fast death. [...]
The knees have never jerked so hard. No surprise, I guess, but still the way doom can set in after one game – one fucking game! – does my head in. A few concerns are understandable. All out panic is pathetic. “The squad is too thin”. Well, an injury crisis does that! Could it be [...]
It’s all very well the BBC’s Radio One Newsbeat team offering an on-air apology for their awful mistake about Hillsborough, in which they claimed that the official report blamed Liverpool fans for the tragedy. But that won’t correct the mistruth in the minds of all those who only heard the original broadcast, and who missed [...]
I am still in shock at the reaction of Sam Allardyce and Alex Ferguson to a gesture made by Rafa Benítez after the second goal against Blackburn Rovers last week. I’ve never heard anything more pathetic in my life. The gesture that has led both men to publicly attack Rafa is so vague that he [...]
So there we have it. Rafa Benítez has to compete with Bob Paisley, not Alex Ferguson. Rafa Benítez isn’t allowed to use modern techniques, but must stick with those from the 1970s, because they worked then. Why stop there? Why not insist on the hugely outdated formations from the 1930s? Or why not select those [...]
I’ve read some rubbish in my time as a Liverpool fan, but the current criticism of Rafa Benítez just sickens me. While the word ‘sack’ hasn’t been bandied around too much, a serious lack of faith in the boss has been expressed by too many fans. It’s not been a perfect season, and not all [...]
