Not the easiest of games, but one that the Reds have a good chance of winning. The extra couple of days until the Monday night K/O should benefit the Reds who’ve been on international duty, with a sensible amount of playing time given to most: not too much, but enough to help players like Torres and Benayoun get closer to full match sharpness.
How will Sam Allardyce cope with Rafa’s rude and ruthless gestures? Will Big Sam be able to hide his tears this time, as he waits for the Liverpool manager in a place that he acknowledges you don’t usually find him?
Usual pack-drill, Subscribers can discuss all aspects of the game below. Will fielding a strong team in the Europa League backfire on Sunday? Or was the game against Unirea little more than a glorified training session, with attack against stubborn, crowded, well-drilled defence?
So, the Europa League: a chance to win a trophy, or a competition to clog up the fixture list and potentially cause injuries and fatigue ahead of Premier League games? Who should Rafa pick? And expectations? Discuss below.
A big game for both clubs, with their fortunes having reversed somewhat in recent weeks. A tough game awaits, though, with Arsenal away a fixture in which Liverpool wins are now a rarity, and no doubt Arshavin’s will suddenly start shooting straight again. The Gunners are vulnerable to counter-attacks, and if Torres was fit I’d fancy a long-overdue Reds victory at the Emirates, but as it stands I’d be more than happy with a draw.
Massive game, obviously. Thankfully, even during the dark days of this season, the Reds have been able to raise their game for the big encounters. But defeat would send everyone spiralling over the metaphorical cliff once again. Was there ever a time when games weren’t “must win”?
While failing to beat Wolves was disappointing (as was the grim attacking display), the last five league games – only two of which were at home – have seen the Reds pick up three wins, two draws and no defeats; keeping four clean sheets, too. That extrapolates to 84 points over 38 games – not that I’m saying Liverpool will achieve such a haul, I’m just pointing out that the current run of form, even including last night, is a big improvement on earlier in the campaign.
At last a bit of form – joint 2nd in the Premiership form league based over the past six games. But every match remains must-win if the momentum is to be maintained.
A shame, after the late miss/penalty claim, that we’re not going into this with three league wins on the spin. But the good news this weekend was that the Reds got the best result out of the four challenging for 4th, with City losing at Everton, and Spurs and Villa drawing at home with teams lower in the table than Stoke.
