Spotlight on the Academy – May 2013

Academy season review by Arnar Steinsson.

Busy is probably the best word to describe this season at Kirkby. I don’t think that many last summer would have bet on so many youngsters from our Academy making the transition to the first team, and especially not playing as many games as Raheem Sterling in the first half of the season. Or that we would at times play with a frontline aged 25, 17 and 18.

Sometimes it was out of necessity due to lack of squad depth, but Sterling, Suso and Wisdom deserved it as well. They had some very good performances and some that failed to shine, but that is of course natural due to their age, and besides the same could be said about much of our first team squad as well.

We also had the youngest debutant in the history of the club when Jerome Sinclair came on against WBA at 16 years and 6 days old, and he was substituted for another debutant, Samed Yesil. Adam Morgan made a first team debut in the Europa league, so did Connor Coady in the Europa League and the Premier league. And 17 year old Jordon Ibe made his first start in our last game of the season against QPR, playing very well and providing an assist for Coutinho.
