Referee’s View – September 2010
October 10, 2010 Simon GF

Simon Fear – pro-qualified referee and Tomkins Times member – takes an uncompromising and unbiased look at the officiating in games involving Liverpool in September 2010. Was luck for or against the Reds?

Liverpool faced a difficult start in September with an away fixture against Birmingham at St Andrews, away against Man Utd  at Old Trafford, followed by Sunderland at Anfield.

Birmingham (A) – Mark Halsey.

Mark Halsey last officiated a Liverpool match on 03rd March 2009 when Sunderland were defeated 2 – 0 at Anfield. Mr Halsey has a deserved reputation for being one of the best referees on the Premier League list and his non demonstrative, laid back manner allows him to manage any fixture and remain calm and consistent throughout. The game will be remembered for a world class performance by Pepe Reina who undoubtedly earned Liverpool a point, however there were calls for two penalties, one to either side that could easily have been decisive in a hard fought 0 – 0 stalemate.
