With Liverpool due to play Trabzonspor in the Europa League Play Off round, it seems an appropriate time to look back at our previous encounters against Turkish opposition.
The most famous of our trips to Turkey did not include opposition from that country, of course, and so the Istanbul final of 2005 is not covered here.
1976-77 European Cup Second Round – Trabzonspor – Qualified
Liverpool were rapidly becoming a major force in Europe, having won the UEFA Cup the previous season and so were expected to qualify comfortably against the surprise Turkish champions, Trabzonspor. Liverpool had easily dispatched the part-timers of Crusaders in the first round, winning 7-0 on aggregate, with a 5-0 away win following a narrow 2-0 victory at Anfield.
