No manager. Temporary Chief Executive. Temporary Managing Director. No spade in the ground, let alone new stadium. Spiralling debt. Key players  (some, if not all) almost certain to leave. And two hated owners looking to get out, but whose asking price suggests they’re in no rush.

First things first, a new manager must be brought in to steady the ship and bring at least some form of optimism. Planning for the new season has to start soon. But that could be easier said than done. Here are my thoughts on the contenders, and the pros and cons of each as I see them; my ideal appointment; and the pitfalls I hope the club avoids.
