    New-Look Tomkins Times

As you may have noticed, the site has been evolving in recent weeks, with the addition of several high-quality guest writers and a new appearance for the home page. The idea is that I provide the same amount of content as before (one original piece a week, minimum), but that on other days the site has articles from a variety of high-quality contributors – to help make the £3.50 a month for TTT even better value for money.

    Referee Review – March 2010

    Referee Review – March 2010

Liverpool faced a testing fixture list in March with matches against Wigan, Lille (Home & Away), Portsmouth, Man Utd and Sunderland. It’s fair to say that Liverpool have not been blessed with many breaks this season from the men in black and have suffered a number of contentious decisions. So how would the men in the middle perform this month?

    Midfield Pairings and Flawed Logic

Apparently, you only have to play Steven Gerrard in central midfield and all problems are solved. If that was the case, why was the Reds’ worst league performance of the season at Wigan, with him in that very position?

    The Joy of Fernando Torres

    The Joy of Fernando Torres

Watching Fernando Torres at Atletico Madrid, there was always a nagging doubt in my mind about this rangy, tousle-haired darling of the Vicente Calderon. Sure, Atleti supporters, ever eager to worship, adored him. Sure, he carried the team through several seasons almost single-handedly (albeit often surrounded by decent/underperforming players). But did he have that star quality, the ability to mark his name down as one of the very best in the world?

The Eagles Have Landed – Benfica Preview

Portugal has provided some of the more memorable moments in the history of European competition, going back to the mighty Eagles of Benfica in the early years of the European Champions Cup. Although the most famous names are Benfica, Porto and Sporting other clubs are well represented, albeit generally in the lesser competitions.

Reds Back on Track, Steve Bruce Deflated

It’s not been a particularly enjoyable season – one I’ve found hard to deal with on a number of levels. It’s been a campaign with too many defeats (after two seasons of barely being beat), but were the Reds now to finish 4th and win the Europa League it would certainly represent success; even if it wouldn’t satiate the ultimate dreams we harboured last August.

    Lucas Vs Gerrard

You don’t win the Bola de Ouro (Golden Ball), given to the best player in the Campeonato Brasileiro — an honour previously won by the likes of Zico, Romario, Kaká and Carlos Tevez — if you can’t play football (an allegation against Lucas you don’t have to look far to find should you care to frequent Liverpool forums).

    Sunderland (H) Pre/Post-Match Discussion

    Sunderland (H) Pre/Post-Match Discussion

Depending on how results go on Wednesday night with both Man City (v Everton) and Aston Villa (v Sunderland) in action, Liverpool could find themselves in 7th place 2pts behind Aston Villa, 5pts behind Man City and 7pts behind Spurs by the time they kick off at 4pm on Sunday. In a weekend where Aston Villa could drop points against an unpredictable Chelsea side, and with both Spurs (v Portsmouth) and Man City (v Wigan) having home bankers, this is a game where nothing less than 3pts will do for Liverpool in the pursuit for the 4th Champions League spot.

    Right Manager, Wrong Owners

If you are fans of Portsmouth, Liverpool, Newcastle or Manchester United, the success (in some cases, relatively speaking) of a century of building a fanbase and a history (now known as ‘building a brand’) is rewarded by someone buying your club and making a mess of all that’s gone before.

Playoffs, 39 Games, and Other Madness

Remember Britpop? Remember when some unheard of rockers from Manchester called Oasis won the best newcomer award at the Brits? Remember Parklife? Remember the battle of the bands for chart supremacy? Robson and Jerome anyone? If pop music’s not your thing, try this. Do you remember an embattled leader, under increasing pressure, being attacked from all sides? Do you remember those who thought said leader was too preoccupied with European affairs, and hadn’t delivered domestically? Remember the simmering discontent?
