    Tough and Rumble

Well, if Liverpool didn’t know they were in a battle for 4th, they do now; indeed, too literally so this weekend. After the utter nonsense last season, the Blackburn game was always going to be a bigger deal than usual. Add that the Reds took to the field only after Manchester City and Spurs had already won, and it was a fixture on a knife-edge.

Editorial Bias in Media Against Benítez

Editorial Bias in Media Against Benítez

It has come to my attention that one of football’s most prominent television personalities, in a seriously high-profile position, continually refers to Rafa Benítez as “the fat Spanish waiter” when off camera. Perhaps even more alarmingly, editorial decisions have been made to purposely show Benítez in a bad light, in a way that would definitely not be done with other managers.

    Blackburn (H) – Pre/Post-Match Hand Gestures

How will Sam Allardyce cope with Rafa’s rude and ruthless gestures? Will Big Sam be able to hide his tears this time, as he waits for the Liverpool manager in a place that he acknowledges you don’t usually find him?

    Bargain Hunting

Looking back over our 25 years at the real summit of the game – say between 1965 and 1990 – may give us a clue as to how we might broaden our search for players. There was another factor at work, probably as important as the home-produced talent and the big name signings, and a real cornerstone of our success. All current wisdom declares this ‘third way’ dead and buried, but you wonder whether it could soon come back into fashion. It may have to.

A look back at all of Liverpool’s European fixtures that finished 1-0 after the first leg, by Graeme Riley. In European football history, there have been over 800 instances where the home team in the first leg has travelled with a 1-0 advantage to the away tie.

    Cutting Edge

If you go to a club that is in the top four; that has an unbeaten home record (including victories in various competitions against Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal – twice); that has had an extra 48 hours rest; and that has a starting XI that cost twice as much to assemble, and get a draw, then that, by any stretch of the imagination, is a good result.

    “Lucky Rafa”

It’s interesting to me that a manager with a world-class CV could be described as ‘lucky’ by his critics. If these naysayers were confined to cranks on the internet, it’d be one thing; that the accusation has been made on national TV by commentators is quite another.

    The Underdog Principle

For me, the most influential non-fiction writer of the past decade has been Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Tipping Point, Blink and Outliers. A big sports fan, last year he wrote a long piece in The New Yorker about basketball and the style certain underdogs have deployed to achieve amazing (albeit relative) success. They rarely win trophies, but they do cause upsets.

    Liverpool and the Europa League

It’s the Reds’ debut in the Europa League on Thursday – a good time to look back on our past record in this latest manifestation of the UEFA Cup. As three-times winners of the trophy – in 1972/3, 1975/6 and of course in Dortmund in 2000/1 – we have one of the best records in Europe, just as we have in the big one. Inter and Juventus also have three wins each.

“The Need to Balance the Books”. Having previously looked at Gross spend – which, in effect, deals with the boost of new players irrespective of whether anyone is sold – it’s time to focus on the Net figures, which take into account money raised by sales. This is particularly important for ‘properly run’ clubs, i.e. those that cannot write off expensive flops with a shrug of the shoulders.

We want the site to evolve, but never at the expense of quality, and never by chasing cheap hits and enticing the wrong kind of subscriber (i.e. WUMs, trolls, and Tony Cascarino).

“The Benefit of New Players” … The notion that individual signings take time to settle (or may never settle) is valid. And this may well be at the heart of why significant investment works so well, and leads, within 24 months, to trophies and higher league positions. The injection of new blood seems fairly essential to boost a team; but additional riches give more licence for a hit-and-miss strategy

    Arsenal (A) Pre/Post-Match Discussion

A big game for both clubs, with their fortunes having reversed somewhat in recent weeks. A tough game awaits, though, with Arsenal away a fixture in which Liverpool wins are now a rarity, and no doubt Arshavin’s will suddenly start shooting straight again. The Gunners are vulnerable to counter-attacks, and if Torres was fit I’d fancy a long-overdue Reds victory at the Emirates, but as it stands I’d be more than happy with a draw.

    Derby Day Delight

One thing really bothered me earlier in the season: accusations from some quarters that Liverpool lacked character. This didn’t tally with what I believed to be the case. Last season, time and time again, the Reds showed incredible character to rescue lost causes, and lose so few games.
